FROM THE CHAIRMAN

The Primedia Group steadily works on Corporate Social Investment (CSI) projects to make a difference to individuals, communities and the country as a whole.

Our CSI initiatives are ongoing, and involve all the companies in the group, such as CRIME LINE. A major CSI project of the Group, CRIME LINE was launched in June 2007 and a year later was one of the largest private initiatives of its sort in the world. It has received close to 13 000 SMS entries to date, with almost 500 arrests and the recovery of just over R20 million of stolen property, drugs and counterfeit goods. Another pressing issue in this country is education and the Primedia Foundation awards a number of university bursaries to deserving candidates.

In a bid to encourage the prevention of Genocide in the future, the Primedia Foundation funded the Primedia Chair of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA) through a R5 million grant over five years. The Foundation has also been extensively involved in the creation of the Eternal Flame to the Human Spirit on the UNISA Pretoria Campus. The Flame represents not only the Holocaust, but all forms of Genocide.

The Primedia Skills Development project has been working on the Alexandra Renewal Project Trade Training Programme in conjunction with the Department of Labour. While 150 trainees have been trained in a variety of trades under this programme over the past year, what is most pleasing is that most of these have also been placed in employment.

Techno-agricultural Innovation for Poverty Alleviation (Tipa) is an agricultural project, started in South Africa by the Israeli Embassy with Ikamva Labantu and the JD Group. Together with a number of other founder stakeholders, the Foundation has developed four community farms which will become commercially viable.

I thank the members of the Primedia Foundation and all the individuals in the Group for their dedication to CSI projects this last year. Together we are making a difference.
