PRIMEDIA BURSARY PROJECTS

The Primedia Foundation awards a number of bursaries to deserving candidates studying at universities with which it has signed agreements. To pay for these bursaries the Primedia Group enters into contracts with the various universities for advertising services from its companies.

Bursaries are awarded on four selection criteria.

  • Academic ability
  • At least 70% of the students who receive the bursaries are from groups defined in the Board-based Black Economic Empowerment Act.
  • Students must be in their second or third year of undergraduate study.
  • Students must be registered for a marketing, communications, journalism or accounting degree.

This year students short listed by the University of Johannesburg (ex-RAU) were interviewed and 16 bursaries were granted for the 2008 academic year. Two students were granted bursaries at the University of the Free State for this academic year and 38 bursaries were granted to students at the University of South Africa. A further six students were awarded bursaries at the University of the Western Cape.

The value of bursaries awarded in 2008 totalled R524 310.00. Since inception of the bursary project in 2001 the Primedia Foundation has awarded 186 bursaries.

Sangoni Senior Secondary School

The top achieving matric boy and girl learners of the Sangoni Senior Secondary School are also awarded bursaries to allow them to pursue a university education. The school is supported by the Primedia Group through the Sangoni Senior Secondary School Project, (Detailed on page 10).

Primedia Group Staff Bursary Programme

A number of employees’ children are also awarded bursaries through the Primedia Foundation. The bursaries allow the children to study at a recognised tertiary institution from their first year of study for a period of up to three years, depending on their chosen field of study.

The selection criteria for this programme include financial need and the applicant’s academic record. The applicant is also expected to become a leader in his or her chosen professional field. Funding of the applicant is reviewed annually.
