In addition to the many activities of the Primedia Foundation, individual companies within the Primedia group set up and manage their own CSI programmes.
Each year, Primedia gives recognition to those group companies which have gone above and beyond when it comes to giving back to society. Primedia’s CSI Award emphasises the importance of corporate social investment within the group, and recognises the company which has made the greatest contribution to the communities within which it operates.
Ster-Kinekor, MEGAPRO Marketing, and Primedia Broadcasting were nominated for the award this year.
Ster-Kinekor’s key initiative is Vision Mission, which focuses on achieving various objectives related to eyesight and eye care. The first project to be launched under its umbrella was the Ster-Kinekor Eye Care project, which has already tested the sight of over 1 000 learners, and fitted those who needed them with glasses.
MEGAPRO Marketing joined with Signet Licensing to support the Magaliesberg local community in the upliftment of its educational standards. This CSI project has focused on opening the school twice a week to adults who need education in the areas of basic literacy and numeracy.
For the significant contributions made by its four radio stations however, Primedia Broadcasting took home the trophy.
The philosophy of being a good corporate citizen is high on the agenda of management and staff at Primedia Broadcasting. Each radio station occupies a central place in the city in which it broadcasts, making its involvement in community matters essential. The stations’ numerous CSI-related events have seen substantial amounts of funding being generated for various causes.
Below are some of the bigger Primedia Broadcasting events which took place during the 2005/6 financial year.
Talk Radio 702 once again held its Birthday Build with Habitat for Humanity. It raised funds for the SOS Children’s Villages through its 702 World Aids Day Fundraiser, and handed over the Mercy Centre for abused women. Other notable initiatives were the 702 FNB Housing Initiative, and the station’s second Birthday Wish promotion, where 34 wishes were granted.
94.7 Highveld Stereo held its annual Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge, which benefited the Homeless Talk Pre-school/Crèche. The 94.7 RAW Christmas Wishlist made dreams come true at Christmas, and the 94.7 and Bidvest Hear For Life Trust enabled a number of cochlear implants. Other events included a radiothon for the Tomorrow Trust which received over R5.2m in pledges.
567 CapeTalk’s Big Build with Habitat for Humanity was a great success, as was its Fire Relief Fund and Silence the Violence march through Cape Town. The CapeTalk Christmas Garden Party for the Ndlovu Crèche in Monwabisi Park brought festive cheer to needy children, while the CapeTalk Paws for a Cause event raised funds for the Animal Rescue Foundation.
Finally, Kfm 94.5 held its biggest Christmas Wish List ever, granting 40 wishes for needy people. The station also held its annual Kfm 94.5 Youth Day Experience, and its Big Dig, which raised funds for two organisations.
